Chapter 16, Section 1
1. Agriculture, industry, transportation, and communication have changed since the fall of the soviet Union in Russia in many ways. For agriculture, the amount of needed agricultural imports went down and they developed a new land code so they could buy and sell farm land. Russia's industrail activity dropped after the fall of the soviet reunion but it is slowly rising again. Russia's main source of transportation is trains/subways and waterways because many of their roads and streets have been flooded. Communications used to be controlled before the fall, but now russians are free to express new and different views.
2. Russia is involved in the United Nations Security Council. Russia has also joined European organizations that hep support security and cooperation. This country has worked to settle conflicts and has supported peace efforts in several countries.
Creative Writing:
The Soviet command economy was focused on increased industrial production. They failed to see the need to invest in high-technology industries. As a result the economy became stagnated while their standard of living began to decline. At this time the next head of the government tried to move toward a market economy and people were then allowed to start small buisinesses and take part in foreign investment.
Chapter 16, Section 2
1. The World bank's Sustainable Forestry Pilot Project is helping Russia manage its resources. They are allowing them to use land more wisely, protecting forests, planting new trees, and increase private investment.
2. There are some problems Russia is going to face in the future, one having to do with the fish population shrinking more and more each year mainly because of supertrawlers. Also piplines that carry oil and gas travel though surronding natural enviornments and threatens the wildlife. Lastly, there is the idea of global warming. It is currently happening at a dramatic pace in western Siberia.
Creative Writing:
Polution in Russia has impacted humans living there in many ways. For one, nuculear wastes are extemely dangerous to be exposed to humans and a lot of the nuclear energy was dumped directly into the Barents, Baltic, and Bering sea. Most of russias lakes and rivers have been polluted by industrialisation. The air and soil quality is also not good because of the fact that toxic waste dumps and airborne pollution poisens Russias soil.

Chapter 15 Homework
Chapter 15, Section 1
1. In post-Soviet Russia the role of religion has changed becase after the fall of the Soviet Union, Russians are able to rediscover their faiths and traditions by expressing themselves creativly. For example after this fall, the area of Russia was largely influenced by many foreign missionaries from Western Christian denominations.
2. Russia is home to one of the widest varities of ethnic groups in the world. Russia's main ethnic groups are The Slavs, the Caucasian Peoples, and the Turkic Peoples.
Creative Writing:
During the Soviet era many people attended school, it was free and mandatory. Although, the education was limited to math science and engineering which was the reason for the intellictual elite. Today the curriculum is much different and includes all subjects. This is much better becasue now these people can become successful at whatever subject suits them and there are more options for their future.

1. The ancestors of the ehtnic Russians were the Varangians(Scandinavian warriors) and the Slav people.
2. The Soviet Union collapsed due to the weakening economy, and the great discrepancies between workers wages and the privlages their leaders enjoyed.
Creative Writing:
The United States began fighting against the Soviet Union in the Cold War which was the struggle between competing systems of comunism or capitalism. Later the weakening ecomomy and discrepencies with workers wages and power began to pull apart the Soviet Union. All of the surronding satallite countries overthrew their communist leaders and therefore the Soviet Union collapsed.

Chapter 14 Homework
Chapter 14, Section 1
1. The land area of Russia covers about 6.6 million square miles.
2. Some of Russia's main natural resources are fossil fuels like petroleum and coal reserves, they are also amoung the top 3 producers of aluminium, gemstones, and platinum group metals.
Creative Writing:
It is very important to preserve Russia's forests because about one-fifth of the forest lands are located in Russia. Without these forests we wouldnt have one-fifth of the oxgen that gets returned to the atmosphere from plants, which is vital to our lives. These forests also supply us with most of the world's timber, pine, fur, spruce, and cedar.

1. Russia's major climates consist of mainly a subarctic climate, along with dry steppe, humid continental, tundra, and highland climate.
2. Taigia, grasslands, decidious forests, sunflowers, sugar, beets, and wheat, are all kinds of natural vegetation found in Russias climate region.

Trying to march through russia during its cold winter was one of the worst experiences of my life. We traveled for hundreds of miles through freezing snow, lacking food and supplies. More and more soilders had begun to die and there was nothing anyone could do about it. In our attempt to return home, less then one-fourth of the original soilders had survived.
